Workshop 12 – Smell Lab: Experimental Scent Design

In an exciting exploration of one our most powerful (and overlooked) senses, olfactory artist and SmellLab Berlin founder Klara Ravat will introduce participants to the world of aroma molecules, olfactory families, and scent design techniques. Experimenting with more than 20 different compounds, participants will learn how to distill a concept-based scent – be it for a signature perfume, an immersive installation, or an olfactory intervention.

In this workshop you will learn:
▸ Introduction into the (hidden) world of scent and olfactory
▸ A primer in scent design and perfume making methods
▸ How to differentiate and describe 23 different scent molecules
▸ How to mix and combine these scent molecules for composition
▸ How to create – and bottle – a unique, concept-based scent

Level:
▸ Beginner

Host:
Klara Ravat (ES)

Klara Ravat is an olfactory artist an experimental filmmaker based in Berlin.
By opposing the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Ravat absorbs the tradition of remembrance art into daily practice. By investigating the concept of landscape in an adventurous and exploratory way, she wants to amplify the wonderment of the spectator by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil poetic images that leave traces and balances on the edge of alienation and recognition.
After studying qualitative trend research in Barcelona Klara moved to The Netherlands where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (ArtScience at The Royal Academy of Arts). At the same time, she started studying Psychology at the Open University of Catalonia. Klara is the co-founder and the director of the Smell Lab, a community project that focuses on the investigation and practice of the art and science of the sense of smell.
